OIG: Physician received $230,000 in Medicare overpayments

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, October 9, 2006

A New Jersey urologist improperly claimed more than $230,000 in Medicare costs, according to a new OIG audit.

Of the 100 claims taken from the physician, Saad Antoun of Holmdel, NJ, 90 claims for 185 services did not qualify for Medicare reimbursement.

The OIG recommended Antoun work with the New Jersey carrier to reimburse the Medicare program for the inappropriately claimed costs. The OIG also said to establish effective controls to ensure that only services that are sufficiently documented and correctly coded are billed to Medicare.

Antoun said he disagrees with OIG's review results for 84 of the 90 claims indentified as overpayments in the audit, but agreed with the remaining six claims.
