Indiana residents will have more access to information about serious medical errors made by hospitals thanks to new regulations adopted by state health officials.

The regulation, requiring hospitals to disclose medical records, will go into effect in February 2007, according to a report by the Indianapolis Star.

The state report will only identify the hospitals, not patients or medical officials.

Hospital officials have long fought against disclosure, but many have accepted the changes in healthcare.

"Human nature dictates that you tend not to want to expose your weaknesses to the public, but we're a different type of industry," Richard Graffis, chief medical officer for Methodist and Indiana University hospitals and Riley Hospital for Children, told the Star. "The consequences are so big."
