Your organization needs appropriate policies and procedures to comply with HIPAA's privacy rule, but that's just the first step. You also need to ensure that staff follow those policies and procedures. It's not easy, and each organization has its own way of auditing compliance, but it's important to do it on an ongoing basis.

"There are so many areas to address," says Sharon Busler, MHA, RHIA, director of health information services and privacy officer at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, NH. Busler's organization has been auditing HIPAA compliance since it began preparing for the privacy rule's 2003 compliance date, but made its auditing process more comprehensive during the past six months. "Compliance was already looking at similar areas, so it made sense to combine the efforts," she says.
