Paying for cleanup after a data breach is more than five times as expensive as using tools-such as data encryption, host-based intrusion prevention, and security audits-to prevent a breach, according to Gartner, Inc. a research firm based in Stamford, CT.

An organization with 10,000 accounts could spend $16 per account for the proper security tools, said Avivah Litan, vice president and analyst at Gartner. "This compares with an expenditure of at least $90 per customer account when data is compromised or exposed during a breach," she added in a Gartner release.
