The OIG reported that it expects to recoup $1.02 billion in audit and investigative-related recoveries, according to a written release. Among the enforcement actions this quarter is a settlement with Serono S.A. a Swiss manufacturer for $704 million-plus interest, for the illegal promotion of AIDS drug Serostim.
"These recoveries reflect our dedicated efforts to reduce fraud, waste, and abuse in HHS programs," said Inspector General Daniel R. Levinson. "It is thought through a combination of vigilant oversight, outreach to the healthcare community, and partnership with government agencies at all levels that we are able to accomplish this mission."
In addition to the money collected, the OIG also excluded 1,540 individuals and organizations related to healthcare fraud and abuse.
