Healthcare organizations can begin submitting applications for national provider identifiers (NPI) on behalf of their providers via electronic file interchange, CMS announced May 1. The process-also known as bulk enumeration-allows organizations to submit multiple provider applications in a single electronic file. This saves providers the hassle of applying individually for the identifier.

Interested organizations can obtain information about electronic file interchange from the CMS Web site. Before participating in bulk enumeration, organizations must complete a certification and receive approval from CMS. Info on certification is available here.
