Diagnostic testing: Follow the right set of regulations

Hospitals and nonhospital settings, such as independent diagnostic testing facilities (IDTF), have different physician-supervision requirements for diagnostic radiology tests. But the lines can be blurred when a hospital also has free-standing clinics.
For many providers, the official rules and regulations are difficult to find. Still, hospital auditors and compliance officers should be aware of the differences when verifying that their facility's diagnostic radiology tests meet physician-supervision standards-particularly if they work for a hospital in which diagnostic tests are performed in a provider-based clinic separate from the hospital campus.
