Cardiologist indicted on charges of health care fraud

A Lafayette, LA cardiologist has been indicted for allegedly performing unnecessary procedures on patients and billing for them, reported the Insurance Journal.

The physician, Mehmood Patel, 60, is also being sued by more than 300 patients who claim he performed unnecessary angioplasty and stent replacements on them. The indictment includes 94 counts related to procedures he performed at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and Lafayette General Medical Center in Louisianna. While his priveliges at those hospitals have been suspended his medical license has not, however, he is restricted from performing heart procedures, the Journal reported.
