As the May 15 deadline for Medicare Part D looms, enrollment in the program is accelerating at a rapid pace. Around 5.3 million beneficiaries signed up for the prescription drug coverage in the last three months, including 1.5 million who signed up in the last 30 days. In total, more than 25 million people now have the coverage. Beneficiaries who sign up after the May 15th deadline will be assigned a 1% penalty each month. "We've seen enrollment continue at a steady pace, faster than we saw before the December surge," said Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mark McClellan in a press statement.
The current overall drug benefit enrollment figures are:
- about 4.9 million beneficiaries enrolled in stand-alone plans
- 6.2 million dual eligibles
- 4.7 million beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans
- about 6.4 million retirees with drug benefits through unions or former employers that receive a subsidy from Medicare
- 1 million retirees with employer-sponsored drug coverage to supplement Medicare drug benefits
- 3.1 million retirees enrolled in TRICARE--the military health program
