It's been almost three years since the compliance date for HIPAA's privacy rule, and many organizations still have a lot of work to do, according to the latest benchmarking survey for Medical Records Briefing (MRB). Only 61% of 104 survey respondents reported that their organizations' privacy compliance efforts are complete, while 37% claimed that their efforts still need some work.
HCPro conducted the survey in October and November of 2005, and respondents included subscribers to the monthly newsletter.
For those who believe you can't have privacy without security, there are a lot of organizations in trouble. Sixty percent of survey respondents reported that their security compliance efforts still need some work, and 7% admitted their efforts need a lot of work.
The good news is that most organizations seem to understand the importance of staff training. Ninety-six percent of those who responded to the benchmarking survey reported that they will retrain staff, while 63% said they plan to do so annually.
Look in the March 2005 issue of MRB for more survey results.
