If your lab needs to assign the compliance role to someone already responsible for another administrative function, there are steps you can take to make the two positions gel more effectively.

First, get the right person for the job. The most important issue isn't the number of hats that an individual wears within an organization. If you have a good compliance committee and talented outside legal assistance, then the right person can handle compliance in addition to other duties, says healthcare attorney Hope Foster of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky, and Popeo, PC, in Washington, DC.

Second, come up with detailed job descriptions. In defining dual roles, job descriptions are critical. An individual should have a clear and thorough job description for each role that lists his or her relevant duties, the person to whom he or she reports, and other terms key to the job's success, says Neil Caesar, Esq., attorney at The Health Law Center, in Greenville, SC.
