Accountability triggers results when it comes to creating an ongoing records review process, said Sharon Lewis, MBA, RHIA, CPHQ, of CPR Technologies in Stevenson Ranch, CA To ensure accountability in your ongoing records review process she says you should take the following steps:

  • Set goals. "Goals drive organizational success," said Lewis.
  • Clarify expectations. "Expectations need to be communicated, or the organization may move too quickly from the task," explained Lewis.
  • Define roles and responsibilities. "Defining roles and responsibilities provides a mechanism to clearly assign who is responsible for carrying out the task," said Lewis.
  • Monitor progress and measure results. "To monitor progress and measure results, something is needed against which to evaluate them," said Lewis.
  • Gather feedback. "Feedback encourages accountability, fosters ownership, nurtures commitment, and creates ongoing value for each department," said Lewis.
  • Formulate action goals. "Performance improvement is related to embracing lessons learned," Lewis said.
  • Integrate process improvement. "Process improvement opens the door to action; goals are set, expectations clarified, responsibilities defined, progress and results measured, and feedback is gathered," said Lewis. This tip is an excerpt from Strategies for Health Care Compliance.
