Read three new models for reviewing patient status

Chances are, your facility assigns patients to "inpatient" or "observation" status in the following way:

  • The physician evaluates the patient.

  • The physician admits the patient to "observation" or "inpatient" by checking a box on the order sheet.

  • The case manager applies a set of criteria using criteria-determining software (e.g., Interqual). If this criteria differs from the physician order, the case manager asks the physician to change the order. The physician then either becomes angry with the case manager, changes the order, or both.
