Three new groups of patients may be eligible for cardiac rehabilitation services under a proposed CMS expansion issued on December 22, according to a CMS press release. These patients include those who have had heart valve repair or replacement, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, and heart or combined heart-lung transplant.

"With this proposed coverage decision, CMS seeks to expand coverage to a greater number of beneficiaries with cardiac illness," said Mark McClellan, MD, CMS administrator. "But just as importantly, we hope that our proposed decision will raise the public's awareness regarding cardiac rehabilitation services in general."

To see details on the proposed coverage policy go to http://www.cms.hhs.gov/center/coverage.asp. CMS will be accepting comments on the new proposal for 30 days. A final decision will be issued within 60 days of the closing of the comments period.
