The OIG has found that the state of Mississippi overstated upper payment limits for private, state and non-State government hospitals by approximately $224 million in between October 2000 and December 2002. This figure includes inpatient overpayments of $183 million and outpatient overpayments of $41 million. The OIG is now recommending that the state work with CMS to resolve the overpayments, develop new systems to prevent the problem from reoccurring and identify and refund any overpayments made since the time of the audit, according to the OIG.
