OIG investigators plan to focus on Medicare Part D, according to the 2006 Work Plan , released November 16, 2005. The Work Plan now features a section devoted exclusively to the new prescription drug benefit.

The Work Plan spells out that, to monitor Part D, the OIG will assess

  • the extent to which Medicare beneficiaries are aware of the program's low-income subsidy

  • the true out-of-pocket costs to beneficiaries

  • the marketing of Part D benefits

  • CMS' coordination and oversight of auto-enrollment of Medicaid beneficiaries into Medicare Part D plans

  • the coordination between Medicare Parts B and D to prevent duplicate payments

  • fraud and abuse controls for the prescription drug card program

The massive new drug benefit program will clearly be a concern for drug companies, long-term care providers, and nursing homes, but what about hospitals and physician practices?
