Government tipsters: They're who you least expect

It's not easy to guess who is a potential government tipster. Disgruntled employees, competitors, and the media are all places the government gets its leads. The following are other possible sources:

  • Qui tam actions. Those who successfully allege fraud against the government collect 15-30% of what the government recovers.

  • The government itself through CMS and its database.

  • Ex-spouses of employees.

  • Ex-employees.

  • So-called "jammed-up defendants." These are people who cooperate with the government because they are already in trouble and want a break.
