There's a new proposal being considered by Medicare's payment advisory group MedPAC to measure inpatient hospital resource use and its impact on hospital costs during inpatient stays.

Inpatient hospital costs represent about 30% of Medicare spending, according to MedPAC analyst Anne Mutti.

At a meeting November 16, MedPAC outlined a proposal that would reduce unnecessary resources. The proposal would attempt to

  • examine inpatient hospital costs paid by Medicare

  • study hospitals' influence over costs associated with the volume of care during an inpatient stay.
