The final version of the Hospital Customer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey was placed in the Federal Register: November 7, 2005 (Volume 70, Number 214) for a 30-day public comment period ending at 5 p.m. on December 7.
Following the comment period, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will review the survey for final clearance, and CMS expects to finalize and release the survey into the public domain in January, 2006. CMS will schedule four training sessions on the survey instrument and requirements during the month of January in order to train hospitals wishing to field the survey.
Hospitals planning to participate in the national implementation should sign up for the dry-run of the instrument. During the five-to-six month dry run, data will be collected from participating hospitals but not publicly reported. Public reporting of HCAHPS performance on the Hospital Compare web site is not expected to begin until mid-2007, when sufficient data has been collected by participating hospitals. For more information about the survey requirements, see www.cms.hhs.gov/regulations/pra.
HCPro, Inc. is collecting feedback about hospitals' intended use of the HCAHPS instrument, and we would like your input. The resulting data will be shared with you via our ezines. Responders to the survey will be entered into a drawing for $50. To take the short six-question survey, please click here.
