Answer these questions to see how your facility measures up
Wouldn't it be nice if setting up a clinical repository to support your electronic health records (EHR) were as easy as buying a product, plugging it in, and rolling ahead?
However, the truth--as many hospitals have already discovered--is that setting up a clinical repository is complicated. The process brings up endless questions surrounding data integrity, interfaces, and which information to store--and that's not to mention security.
That said, at every step, your facility exposes itself to countless challenges. A system failure, a department left unable to communicate, the loss of data, and the risk of privacy violations are all top concerns.
If your facility is setting up a clinical repository, do your homework from the beginning. To get you started, Michael Uretz, executive director of The EHR Conulting group in Seattle, WA, and Terry Jacobs, director of EHR initiatives for Siemens Medical Solutions in Malvern, PA, offer several suggestions below.
