How documentation review saved one hospital $6 million
It's a situation that's all too familiar for auditors and compliance officers: Staff in the catheterization lab are too busy to routinely check their billing sheets.
That's where auditor Kelly W. Steltenkamp, RN, of Central Baptist Heart & Vascular in Lexington, KY, comes in. It's her job to routinely check the billing sheet against clinician documentation.
Ideally, the hospital administration would like staff in the cath lab to learn to bill accurately as well as capture all of the equipment used on their own. However, these staff still make mistakes, says Steltenkamp.
