Four commonly used audit tools

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, August 23, 2005

Last week we covered four tools commonly used by auditors: focus groups, interviews, questionnaires, and observation. This week, we'll feature four more.

1. Case studies create discussion where questions or polling often allow for limited responses. The most effective case studies are those taken from actual events, often from news reports.

    2. Record review may be anything from logs to audit trails too acknowledgement or request forms. Records may be the sole source of data, or may be a corroborating source.

      3. A variety of test formats may be used to collect data. Tests include the social engineering security test, war dialing, war driving, vulnerability scans, or penetration tests.

        4. Forensic analysis, in the context of information security, is a method used to investigate the various means a hacker would gain access to your network.

The above tip is an excerpt from the book "Guide to HIPAA Auditing: Practical Tools and Tips to Ensure Compliance," copyright 2005 by HCPro, Inc.
