Conduct an audit of observation nursing services

Hospitals often fail to code or capture the charges for nursing services performed at the bedside of observation patients. If your facility doesn't report them, your organization may lose revenue it deserves, says Valerie Rinkle, MPA, revenue cycle director for Asante Health System in Medford, OR. Verify that your facility codes and bills the following services performed at the bedside separately from observation hours, according to the outpatient prospective payment system final rule published in the November 1, 2002, Federal Register.
