The Arizona State Board of Nursing is urging providers to be vigilant when screening job candidates in response to a growing number of impostor nurses.
The number of impostors posing as certified nurses in Arizona has doubled in the past two years, according to The Arizona Republic.
The state nursing board discovered seven impostors in both 2001 and 2002. That number grew to 14 in 2003 and to 29 in 2004. This year, 12 have already been discovered, according to the newspaper.
The number of impostors has risen due to a nursing shortage and excellent benefits offered to nurses in Arizona. Typically, impostors have some healthcare experience, but have not been certified as nurses. Many are discovered before they are actually hired, The Arizona Republic reported.
