Be prepared to speak with the media in a crisis
Editor's note: This article is the first in a two-part series about handling media risk. Part two will cover policies for protecting patient privacy during media interactions.
If you're fortunate, the only time your facility will ever deal with the media is when a local reporter decides to write an article promoting your latest fundraiser. But many hospitals aren't that lucky. During a government investigation, you as a compliance officer may be asked to talk with the press. What's more, bad press can create a risk factor for your facility's reputation. It's not smart to wait for a crisis to learn to deal effectively with the media. Be it a government investigation, a difficult personnel situation, or a breach of confidentiality, you'll want to know how to respond when the press starts asking questions.
