Choosing a sample for SATH drug audits

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, May 3, 2005

Last week we discussed which areas of your organization you should include in a self-administered take home (SATH) drug audit. This week, we'll discuss how to choose a sample for the audit. When conducting the audit, choose five random samples from the following areas:

  • Recent observation patient case

  • Non-urgent emergency department cases

  • Interventional radiology cases

  • Day surgery

  • Chemotherapy patients

  • Outpatient blood transfusion cases

  • Any other area you identified where SATH drugs are given

The above tip is an excerpt from the book "Hospital Auditing and Monitoring: Sample Programs for Key Risk Areas." Copyright 2004 by HCPro, Inc. This book is a step-by-step, practical manual that offers sample audit programs for the most troublesome areas that a hospital must audit. The binder and CD-ROM are filled with actual audit programs used by auditors and compliance officers in the field. Click here for more information or to order your copy today.
