Correctly billing SATH drugs

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, April 26, 2005

It's helpful to conduct an audit to determine whether your organization is correctly billing self-administered take-home (SATH) drugs. During the audit, be sure to identify every area where the organization gives drugs to outpatients. Don't forget the include to following areas:

  • Emergency departments and clinics

  • Day surgery

  • Observation patients who stay overnight

  • Interventional radiology patients who need Tylenol while under observation

  • Chemotherapy patients who receive Benadryl before receiving therapy

Look for next week's issue when we discuss how to choose a sample for your SATH audit.

The above tip is an excerpt from the book "Hospital Auditing and Monitoring: Sample Programs for Key Risk Areas." Copyright 2004 by HCPro, Inc.
