If your organization is not yet compliant with the HIPAA security rule, you're not alone.
According to Phoenix Health Systems, a consulting company that provides healthcare information management to hospitals, only 18% of providers indicated they were compliant as of January 2005, and only 80% expect to be compliant by the April 20 deadline.
CMS will monitor your facility's compliance with the security rule, but more importantly, your organization should be concerned about securing patient privacy, says D'Arcy Gue, executive vice president of Phoenix.
Phoenix found that 40% of healthcare providers surveyed had experienced at least one security breach in the past six months. These breaches can cause problems for an organization.
"The biggest risk is the loss of data. Beyond that, the federal government is going to respond to complaints," Gue says. "There have [already] been thousands of complaints made."
