Let's face it: Healthcare compliance involves a lot more than tracking codes and keeping up with the latest OIG Work Plan.
Communication is a huge part of your job. Effectively getting your point across can mean the difference between having a board that backs you 100% and one that is wary of your choices.
Elaine Wade, BSN, compliance auditor at the New Mexico Heart Institute, provides this case in point: "During our recent board meeting, one of the presenters spent an enormous amount of time on the background of the issue. She nearly ran out of time to clarify the issue and ask for the necessary changes to solve the problem. The audience got confused and ultimately frustrated."
HCAS polled several compliance professionals about what has worked for them-and what hasn't.
In addition to Elaine Wade, we received input from Hank Vanderbeek, president of HAV Compliance Services of Haverhill, MA; Jackie Smith, network privacy and compliance officer for the Community Health Network in Indianapolis, IN ; and Robert A. Wade, Esq., a partner at the law firm of Baker & Daniels in South Bend, IN.
