The OIG is cracking down on physicians who prescribe too much OxyContin®, which means your organization must determine how it handles these prescriptions.

In its short history, OxyContin has offered patients long-lasting relief from otherwise disabling pain. But when abused, its euphoric effect has been compared to that of heroin, causing a similar propensity for addiction. Patients desperate for a high have been known to "doctor- shop" for physicians who loosely write prescriptions.

For compliance officers, finding these physicians creates special challenges. In-house audits are not easy, given that records can be altered and may be difficult to track. However, compliance officers should read about the latest trends surrounding OxyContin. The drug won't go away any time soon-and neither will its stream of abusers.
