Q: There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the new G-codes for intravenous (IV) infusions and injections. Are these for physician office billing only or are they for facilities also?
A: The new G codes are not listed on the OPPS fee schedule for hospitals. However, the G codes do have an allowance with Part B. Our clinics are using the G codes, but the hospital is not.
We are using 90780-90799 for nonchemotherapy services and series 96400-96549 for chemotherapy. The key is that G codes are temporary codes and some carriers may not be set up to use these.
Check with your major payers before making a transition to a temporary code. The 90780-90799 and 96400-96549 series have been adopted into CPT and most carriers will accept these.
