Investigator-initiated research: Opportunities, obstacles

Clinical trials have received a great deal of attention from the national media in recent months and have been the subject of numerous guidances and notices from government regulators and private litigators. Regulators are also increasingly scrutinizing "investigator-initiated research," or research in which a clinician-investigator initiates and conducts a clinical investigation either in a private medical practice setting or in an institution with which he or she is affiliated.
