Organizational independence

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, December 21, 2004

Last week we covered external impairments to independence. This week we'll focus on the significance of organizational independence. There are several methods through which audit departments and compliance officers can achieve organizational independence. The OIG recommends that auditors and compliance officers

  • report regularly to the entity's independent committees

  • be free from political pressures

  • audit outside the entity where they are employed

To learn more about organizational and individual independence, order the book "Guide to Compliance Auditing: Applying OIG Techniques and Tools," published by HCPro, Inc. This book provides compliance officers and internal auditors with the same principles and tried-and-true techniques that OIG uses to conduct audits of the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
