Joseph Olstein, MD, was sentenced October 6 to one year of probation and a $20,000 fine following a guilty plea for conspiring to bill insurance companies for free samples of Lupron.

Olstein admitted to getting the samples from TAP Pharmaceutical Products sales representatives, according to a statement from Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Michael J. Sullivan.

If the sentence seems light, it's because Olstein assisted the government beginning in 1999 with its investigation of TAP through the U.S. Attorney General's office in Massachusetts, as well as an investigation of AstraZeneca by the U.S. Attorney's office in Delaware.

The two investigations were resolved with settlement agreements totaling more than $1.2 million.
