In a move to improve the development of new codes for new technologies, CMS announced October 7 it will revise the process it uses to update these code sets. The agency hopes this will make it possible for them to pay for "certain healthcare items and services [to] help get new technologies to patients more quickly."

Private insurers, providers, suppliers, and others "who engage in healthcare transactions" may use the new code sets.

The plan, CMS said, will simplify coverage and payment decisions for these items, and create a more open, transparent coding process.

These changes will be phased in over an 18-month period beginning with the 2006 coding cycle, CMS said.

The code sets plan is one of the first initiatives of the Council on Technology and Innovation (CTI). The CTI, established by the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA), is in charge of coordinating the activities of coverage, coding, and payment processes affecting new technologies and procedures.
