Workstation use and security

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, September 7, 2004

HIPAA defines "workstation" as an electronic computing device. This includes, for example, a laptop or desktop computer, or any other device that performs similar functions, as well as electronic media stored in its immediate environment. HIPAA's security rule includes two standards addressing workstation safeguards:

  • Workstation use that addresses the proper functions to be performed, the manner in which those functions are to be performed, and the physical attributes of the specific workstation or class of workstation that can access electronic protected health information

  • Workstation security that requires implementation of physical safeguards for all workstations that access ePHI to restrict access to authorized users

To learn more about these standards, order the book "Guide to HIPAA Auditing: Practical Tools and Tips to Ensure Compliance," published by HCPro, Inc. This is a step-by-step book and CD-ROM resource for auditing and monitoring your HIPAA compliance program. Click here for more information or to order your copy today.
