Q: I have the hospital-based APC rates for MRI Services. Do you know if there is a separate rate structure for freestanding diagnostic centers?

Medicare reimburses Independent Diagnostic Testing Facilities (IDTFs), a.k.a. "freestanding" diagnostic centers, using the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.
These fee schedules are available for download from the CMS website: click here to view.
The fee schedule lists three payment amounts for MRI services:
1. a global payment for both professional and technical services
2. a professional-only payment indicated by a 26 modifier
3. and a technical-only payment indicated by a TC modifier
The technical-only fee amount is to freestanding MRI centers as the APC payment amount is to hospital-based MRI departments.
