Vice Chairman Barry P. Schochet will resign at the end of the year, after more than 25 years with the company, to "pursue new opportunities in health care investments," according to a July 29 Tenet Healthcare Corp. press release.
Schochet, 53, has been with Tenet for 25 years. He joined National Medical Enterprises (NME), Tenet's predecessor company, in 1979 and was at one time president and chief operating officer of NME's hospital division.
The government is investigating Tenet for possible fraud, after the company admitted in late 2002 that it had pumped up profits in recent years by collecting bigger payments from Medicare for outliers.
The company, based in Santa Barbara, CA, also faces a host of government probes on business practices and private lawsuits including allegations that two physicians performed unnecessary heart surgeries at Redding Medical Center, a former Tenet hospital in California.
