Porter Memorial Health System officials denied accusations by a former employee of Medicare fraud and other wrongdoing at the hospital, according to a July 18 story in Health Law Weekly.

The hospital's chief executive and its board president said the allegations made in a lawsuit by former Vice President and Chief Information Officer Sanjay Shah were baseless.

Shah accused his former employer in a lawsuit of firing him in March in violation of his employment contract and cheating him out of bonus and incentive pay.

Shah claimed in a separate action that he was fired for providing information on illegal activities at the hospital, including the billing of several patients, including Medicare and Medicaid recipients, for medical procedures that were never performed, the story said.

Shah also said he ended a deal to illegally give money to local physicians in return for patient referrals.
