The OIG and the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) released July 1 a jointly developed resource to help boards of directors understand and carry out compliance oversight responsibility, as advised by the revised U.S. sentencing guidelines issued in April.
"An Integrated Approach to Corporate Compliance: A Resource for Health Care Boards of Directors" addresses the roles of in-house counsel and chief compliance officers in overseeing the compliance function of healthcare organization governing boards, according to the AHLA.
It features guidance on recent legal developments in corporate responsibility and lawyers' professional ethics, as well as the modifications to the sentencing guidelines and the recommendations of the American Bar Association Task Force on Corporate Responsibility.
The resource also includes the results of an AHLA survey, which explores the relationship between the general counsel and compliance officer in different healthcare organizations.
According to the document, "While corporate compliance programs are well established in most healthcare industry segments, they continue to evolve in response to emerging 'best practices' and changes in the business environment. All of this suggests that there is value in examining the interplay in the roles of the general counsel and the chief compliance officer in supporting the board's compliance oversight responsibilities."
