OIG saves taxpayers $16.8 billion in first half of 2004

Last week, the OIG sent HHS and Congress its semiannual report for the first half of FY 2004 with some good news. It reported savings to U.S. taxpayers of over $16.8 billion, or approximately $4 billion more than last year's savings for the same period.

The OIG also reported the following:

  • Exclusions of 1,544 individuals and entities for fraud or abuse of federal health care programs and/or their beneficiaries
  • 234 convictions of individuals or entities that engaged in crimes against departmental programs; 07 civil actions, which include all False Claims Act and unjust enrichment suits filed in district court; all Civil Monetary Penalties Law settlements; all administrative recoveries related to provider self-disclosure matters
