Electronic health records get CMS endorsement

CMS awarded a $100,000 grant to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) so they can provide through a pilot project comprehensive, standardized electronic health record (EHR) software to healthcare providers, the agency announced May 28.

According to a CMS press release, the project, which will provide electronic medical records systems in a small number of medical practices, complements additional efforts underway at CMS and across HHS to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery, and represents a broader commitment to supporting public-private partnerships.

President Bush in April established a national goal of assuring that most Americans have electronic health records within 10 years. And Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson expressed his interest in establishing an infrastructure that would allow quick, reliable, and secure access to information for patient care, while also protecting patient privacy.
