Ask three questions to kick-off billing and compliance audits
Healthcare Auditing Weekly, June 1, 2004
An important element within your auditing processes is the billing and coding review. This area presents numerous compliance risks and trouble spots.
To ensure your billing and coding audits get off to the right start, ask yourself the following questions:
a. Are high-risk areas benchmarked so the organization can measure improvement?
b. Does the organization address government focus areas in a timely manner, such as new coding and billing procedures from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and audit plans from the Office of Inspector General (OIG)?
c. Does your organization monitor peer group statistics established by CMS and its contractors?
