With spending 400% higher since 2000 for power wheelchairs covered by Medicare, CMS announced April 28 that it will take steps to reduce fraud and abuse and make sure providers understand payment policies, coverage, and quality of suppliers.

The initiative is designed to make sure the government pays what it should, and at the right price, Acting Deputy Inspector General Dara Corrigan said at the Health Care Compliance Association's annual meeting last week in Chicago.

CMS Administrator Mark McClellan said in a news release that his organization has cracked down on fraud and abuse in the wheelchair market in collaboration with the OIG in a project called Operation Wheeler Dealer. "Now we are moving to the next stage in strengthening our policies for power mobility devices," he said.
