The U.S. Senate approved the nomination of Mark McClellan early on Friday to run CMS despite a firestorm over his opposition to imports of cheaper medicines, according to a March 12 Reuters report. McClellan, a 40-year-old physician and economist, has headed the Food and Drug Administration for the past 16 months.
Reuters reported he is generally well-regarded by Democrats and Republicans but has angered some lawmakers by trying to stop imports of lower-priced medicine from other countries. McClellan consistently argued the practice was too risky.
Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) initially blocked a vote on McClellan's nomination, but told Reuters he relented after Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist promised to set up a group to develop proposals to safely import drugs.
Many lawmakers are seeking a reputable, legal pathway to purchase drugs from Canada and other developed countries. Dorgan said he expected a Senate vote before the November presidential election on a bill to allow importation, Reuters reported. The House of Representatives already has passed an importation bill.
