The new criteria for inpatient admission and its relation to observation services have changed the way we think about hospital care that requires an overnight stay. Prior to the implementation of the 2-midnight rule, hospitals often followed their own standards for timing inpatient admissions. This meant that patients often stayed in observation for more than 24 hours before an admission decision was made. However, hospitals can better allocate resources by following the 2-midnight benchmark and understanding its impact on observation services.
