An effective compliance program should incorporate periodic (at least annual) reviews to determine whether the program’s compliance elements have been satisfied. For instance, did the compliance department appropriately disseminate the program’s standards, provide appropriate training and ongoing educational programs, and enforce appropriate disciplinary actions?
This process will verify that all departments actually complied with the compliance program. Such reviews could support a determination that departments created and maintained appropriate records to document the implementation of an effective program.
However, when monitoring discloses that departments did not detect deviations in a timely manner due to program deficiencies, the compliance department must implement appropriate modifications. Such evaluations, when developed with the support of management, can help ensure compliance with the policies and procedures.
This week’s tip was adapted from The Healthcare professional’s Guide to Policies and Procedures. For more information about this book, visit the HCMarketplace.
