My colleague, Judith Kares, wrote about the new CPT guidance on critical care for 2011 and the composite APC that CMS developed in response. Read her article here. The composite APC that CMS created was suppose to make a composite payment for all the services listed as “included” in critical care in the CPT Manual, because they became separately reportable by hospitals in 2011. However, since implementation, it’s become clear that the codes listed in the manual are actually treated in a number of different ways and are not all directly included in the new critical care composite APC.
