In the past few years, DMEPOS services have been a primary focus by the Medicare enforcement community for potential, as well as actual, fraud and abuse. This focus has included numerous audits, other investigative efforts, and related enforcement actions, as well as the implementation of a Medicare re-contracting and re-credentialing process for all DMEPOS suppliers. It also has included other program safeguards to assure that only reasonable and necessary DMEPOS services ordered by properly credentialed and contracted providers are covered and paid under the Medicare program.
As part of its continuing efforts in this area, CMS is implementing the DMEPOS competitive bidding program (CBP) for certain DMEPOS services provided in specific geographic areas (CBAs).
