Last Friday, CMS issued transmittal R361PI requiring mandatory advanced beneficiary notices (ABNs) to be included as part of the request for additional records (ADRs) for all complex record requests on and after January 1, 2011. Contractors are to perform a face validity assessment of the ABN if the claim is determined not to be reasonable and necessary.
